Foulger, Kenneth's brother, Richard, was located
living in Devon and the suitcase and its contents were returned to him. This

A couple of years ago, a
local businessman bought an old building just down the road from me for
redevelopment. The building had originally been
used as a Territorial Army hall and latterly as
an auction rooms. As it had been an old TA hall, there were several large
memorial tablets around the walls detailing the various officers etc. of
the TA which, obviously, as the place was about to be gutted, needed
photographing for prosperity.
With my
amateur local
historian hat on, I made arrangements to go and
visit the hall and photograph the memorials in situ. Whilst I was there, the
new owner showed me around the place. In one of the rooms, there was a
large, open suitcase unceremoniously dumped on the floor full of bits and
pieces. I had a quick look and saw photos and birth certificates etc.. I
mentioned it to the businessman and he said that it had been left by the
previous auction room owners and I could have it if I liked. So, I took it
away with me.
It was a suitcase full of
someone’s life – Kenneth FOULGER, a descendant of
the FOULGERs of Norfolk/Suffolk. A genealogist’s treasure trove. Letters, a
couple of wills, photos, birth, marriage, death certificates, expired
passports, details of house sales, probate etc. etc. I sorted through it
all, had a good read and sift and drew up a family tree from the information
available. Then the suitcase got put in the cupboard under the stairs.
Every time I sort out the
cupboard under the stairs, I keep thinking I must do something with that
suitcase and its contents. I can’t throw it away because, as a keen amateur
genealogist myself, I know that someone, somewhere will probably be
delighted to have the stuff. I could put it on ebay and flog the bits and
pieces for a couple of quid each but I’m not that mercenary.
I’ve done some googling
and searching of the rootsweb/genealogy bulletin boards etc. but have not
yet come up with anyone who is obviously publicly declaring an interest in
this particular branch of the FOULGERs.
The results
of my investigation into this family can be found by clicking on either the
Leon/Margaret Ruby or the link below to the FOULGER/VALENTINE name index. If
you can prove you are a descendent from either the FOULGER or
VALENTINE, or indeed, any subsidiary family, I'll be happy to let you have
the suitcase and its contents for nothing.
