A kind gentleman, called Phil, from Success By Design emailed us to let us know someone using the email address wallace@fsa.co.uk  (don't bother trying to email that one, it'll only bounce back) had emailed him in what was clearly an attempt to perpetrate a 'Nigerian 419' type scam. The text of the email, titled "Participatory Financial Proposal !!!" (grammatical errors and all) can be found here.

A little Googling shows that this scam has been around for about 18 months or so in similar forms but quietly, It was originally been touted around on newsgroups by a chap called Walter Bentley.

It hacks us off big time that this person has fraudulently used our domain name to help perpetrate his scam and we urge anyone who receives anything like this, whether seemingly from some at fsa.co.uk or anywhere else to immediately exile it to the trash bin of your email package where it belongs.

Nigerian 419 scams are also known as 'Advance Fee Fraud' scams. An advance fee fraud is one where you are invited to stump up a little bit of cash to help someone  on the promise of a much larger sum coming your way later. Of course, you never get any money for your initial investment but the perps get yours - all of yours if you are silly enough to actually give them your bank details.

This is what London's Metropolitan Police have to say about it:

Met Police Advice

The Register has published a salutary tale about a victim of such a scam on the "Anatomy of a 419 scam" which can be found here:

There are also web communities who spend time baiting the scammers and a list is given below. However, before you think of going down the 'scam the scammers' route read the advice on the websites.
