***Edwin James KAY***  

b. 29.02.1876. 1901 census shows him as being an Assistant Colliery Heap Keeper in Birtley. Died 24.10.1971. He was a Church Lay Reader. His picture is here. Went to work at the pits aged 12. Was kicked in the eye by a pit pony. Became a check-weighman at a colliery at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea around 1913. In 1917 moved to Derby. Worked for British Cellulose (later British Celanese) making artificial silk after moving to Derby.

There is a song which has been written by, it is believed, Edwin, about his family. It's not known what tune it is to be sung to. A transcript of it is here. (The copy in the possession of the author of this website will not scan legibly)

Edwin John   b. 06.06.1905 d. 1969. Married Molly (Marian) WINROW - b. 1905, d. 1955. They had a son, Michael b. 1930. Michael married Kathleen and had 1 girl and 3 boys.  Edwin remarried Elsie after Molly died.
Reginald   b. 27.12.1906. d. 18.04.1908. Died from meningitis. Apparently both he and the curate's child contracted it. Both were prayed for. Reginald died, the curate's son survived but was brain damaged

Alice Archbold   b. 07.06.1912. Married Angus MACDONALD-MCCULLOCH (b. 1906, d. 1982) in 1932. They had June b. 1932 (married Michael REED and had 3 boys) and Florence who married Alan WATKINS and had three children.
Frank   b. 22.05.1916. Married Alison. She died. Later he married Betty in 1968 and they had two children.
Florence   b. 13.02.1919. Married Frank Davis in 1947. They had two children
